GSA Memorial Day Picnic a HUGE success!

The Guam Society of America hosted our first outdoor picnic of 2009 at FT Meade, Maryland, on Saturday, May 23, 2009. The function coordinated by Gerald Corpuz (GSA Vice President)and John Uncangco (GSA Treasurer) featured entertainment by Mr. Frank Topasna (DJ), a Kadun Pika (spicy soup) Contest, and loads of Guamanian Barbecue and dessert.

During the picnic, the GSA paid tribute and presented gifts to our high school and college graduating “CLASS of 2009” and announced that each student will receive a $10.00 roll of the newly minted Guam Quarter (with a stamp date of 2009).

    image The Society was established on April 3, 1952 as the Guam Territorial Society of Washington, D.C, a membership society under the Congressional Charter of the National Conference of State Societies (NCSS). The Society was incorporated on October 13, 1976 as a nonprofit corporation under the District of Columbia Nonprofit Corporation Act, and the name was changed to the Guam Society of America on July 3, 1986. In 2002, the GSA membership approved the change to the Bylaws extending the "Period of Service for elected officers from one year to two years.

    image The Mission of the Guam Society of America, Inc. is to promote the culture and traditions of Guam, the native language of the indigenous people of Guam (Chamorro), and the welfare of Guam and the Guamanian people. The Society shall support and sponsor educational, cultural and social programs that foster its mission. The Society shall provide humanitarian aid (1) to victims of natural disasters and (2) for the relief of the poor, the distressed or the underprivileged.

    image The Guam Society of America would like to congratulate our 2009 Cherry Blossom Princess, Christine Borja Quitaro. On Saturday March 21, the GSA honored our Princess at the Cherry Blossom Coronation Ball which was held at the Harvest Moon Restaurant in Falls Church, VA. In attendance was our guest speaker, Senator Judith Won Pat, Congresswoman Madeleine Bordallo, Congressman Gregorio Sablan (CNMI), former Guam Cherry Blossom Queens, and other honored guests.
